About

Lebeau, Joris Johannes Christiaan (Chris)

Joris Johannes Christiaan (Chris) Lebeau (May 26, 1878 - April 2,1945)

Lebeau began his formal art education at the Applied Art School Quellinus Amsterdam, attending classes from 1892 to 1895. He transferred to the State School for Applied Arts in Amsterdam from 1895 to 1899.

In 1900, Lebeau was assigned to assist with the decoration of the Dutch pavilion at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900. Many of his designs for the pavilion were executed in batik, a technique that had been recently introduced in the Netherlands from Javanese colonial influences. He would go on to develop a unique approach to batiking and would quickly become the leading Dutch artists in that field.
