Pewter coin, antique silver finish, comes in airtight case. The first and second batches are identical- there are 600 total. This coin symbolizes the state of limbo when the band spaces out the ambient intros to Maze and David Bowie These Phish Coins were designed in the winter of 2003-2004 as a way to provide the scene with a special piece of memorabilia that was not only really cool, but also highly symbolic! The project truly began in 2000 when I thought that it would be neat to make a "phlipping" coin that was Phish related, and that phans could use to make those random decisions that always seem to pop up. I also envisioned the coin as a unique keepsake of Phish memorabilia that could go with a phan wherever and whenever, and serve as a good luck charm. However, I did not get motivated on the project before the hiatus was announced in the fall of 2000, so I put the idea on the back-burners...
It became obvious to me that the best theme for a coin was to design one side to represent the song "Maze" and the phlip-side of the coin would represent the song "David Bowie". The idea behind the Maze / Bowie Coin was that it would symbolize that state of limbo during the intros to these two songs, before the band had committed one way or the other. This was always a moment of great tension and anticipation, which in my eyes is the essence of why Phish was the best band ever!
The Maze / Bowie Coins were debuted at the Las Vegas run in April of 2004, and the entire 1st run of 300 coins was sold out by the end of the 8 show run in June of 2004. The Maze / Bowie Coin is 1.75" in diameter, and 3 mm in thickness, and it is made out of a nickel-pewter alloy. When Trey pulled the plug just before the June Tour, I decided to have a 2nd run of 300 Maze / Bowie Coins minted, and also determined that it would be a good idea to make a "commemorative coin" to symbolize the wonderful career that Phish had for over 20 years! This is when I came up with the idea for the UVM / Coventry Coin...
My original plan was to create a new Phish Coin for every new tour that the band announced, but that plan was derailed by the May announcement that it would all end in Coventry. The UVM / Coventry Coin was minted in a one-time run of 500 coins. They are made out of bronze, and are also 1.75" in diameter and 3 mm in thickness. The UVM / Coventry Coins were debuted on the all-to-brief August Tour, and were as well-recieved as the Maze / Bowie Coins!
The idea behind the UVM / Coventry Coins was to symbolically "bookend" Phish's career with one side of the coin representing the beginning of Phish, and the other side representing the (unfortunate) end of Phish. I chose Slade Hall @ UVM as the representation of the beginning of Phish because they played many early shows there, and Page's 1st gig with the band was at Slade Hall, and in my eyes, that is when the Phish we all have come to love truly began to take form. Obviously, Coventry would represent the end of Phish, so that was a no-brainer!
The Phish Coins have sold steadily since Phish ended, and I bring them to most shows that I attend to try to continue to spread the love. While there are many phans out there who still have not gotten these Phish Coins but may want to get their hands on one (or both) I have finally decided to create
this website.
While it is sort of a day late, and a dollar short, I still wanted a website where phans can see what the coins look like. If you are interested in the Phish Coins, feel free to shoot me an email at adamdavidoff@hotmail.com and I can provide you with more information about them. Thanks to all of you who have appreciated the concept behind the Phish Coins, and I am sure that all who have them would agree that they are without a doubt one of the best pieces of Phish memorabilia out there!
The Phish Coins come in an airtite coin case, and they are $20 per plus delivery confirmation shipping. I accept Paypal through the email address adamdavidoff@hotmail.com and the coins are basically priced as follows: 1=23, 2=43, 3=64, 4=84, 5=105, etc.... (AD)
