I chose this Mahakala kind of imagery because it seems to describe where our culture is in terms of facing a problem we’ve created. Mahakala and other wrathful forms adopt this fierce appearance to help us. Facing them is facing our fears and our ignorance.
Last winter, during the Marshall fire in Boulder county, my sister called me around midnight. The family was packed up and ready to fly to my house if her block had to evacuate… They were lucky and the evacuations stopped a half mile from her home… Wildfires have always been a part of Colorado life, but in the last decade, they have become so commonplace that each year, we just expect a few days of ash raining down from a dull sky. Now, we’re seeing fires in the winter. It’s a strange way to live and it’s unsettling… In the coming decade, Earth’s equator will need to be evacuated.
