About

Baumberger, Otto (May 21, 1889 - December 26, 1961)

Baumberger was born in Altstetten, Zurich, Switzerland.

He is considered the first bona-fide Swiss poster designer.

Baumberger was employed by the Wolfensberger AG in Zürich, where he developed a sound knowledge of lithographic techniques, and worked continuously to advance that medium. During the four decades of his career, he designed over 200 posters.

Baumberger had a knack for recognizing the successful qualities of consumer advertising by appropriating the styles of other artists. The evolution of his work reflects the most successful imagery in a given period.

His portfolio represents nearly half a century of Swiss commercial graphic design.

Ultimately, Baumberger never received the artistic recognition he sought in during his career.

He died in Weiningen, Switzerland.
