"This is my take on Juana Maria, The Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island. found in 1850 she was the last surviving member of the Nicoleño tribe (part of the Tongva tribe which is important to the area), and she had been living alone on the island with her dogs for nearly twenty years. had a little hut made of whale bones, caught seals, etc. when they brought her to a mission on the mainland she wore a cloak made of cormorant feathers, but died only weeks after arriving. so its her spirit back on the island, back in the darkness other than the moon and bioluminescent waves, far far from the lights of the modern coast. (The last picture features a replica of the cloak from the Old Mission in Santa Barbara)." -Daniel Danger
