After the 81 prints were signed, Steadman and Petro then added another layer of black detail (the hat, horns, forearm, rolex watch and cigarette holder) to all but 4 of the 81 prints. The Sherriff (sic):
This piece was created to commemorate, to the day, the 25th anniversary of Ralph Steadman and Hunter S. Thompson's first collaboration together in which they covered the 1970 Kentucky Derby for Scanlan's magazine. This piece is unique in that it marked not only the first time the two had collaborated on a single piece of art, but along with Vintage Dr. Gonzo, is unusual in that they are the only examples of Steadman's 'Gonzo Art' that Thompson ever signed. The piece makes use of a photograph of Thompson (known as the 'Thompson for Sherriff' image, and bearing that spelling) from the time he ran for sheriff in Aspen, CO. Using the photograph, Steadman and Thompson created a piece consisting of two colors: blue gray with a huge splash of scarlet red, resembling blood, covering Thompson's head. Eighty-one copies were hand printed by master printer Joe Petro III and then signed by Steadman and Thompson on May 6, 1995 (the 121st "Run for the Roses," i.e., the Kentucky Derby) on the trunk of 'The Shark' (Thompson's giant Cadillac convertible) at Thompson's Owl Farm in Woody Creek, CO. After the 81 were signed, Steadman and Petro then added another layer of black detail (the hat, horns, forearm, rolex watch and cigarette holder) to all but 4 of the 81 prints.
The pieces with the additional detail were numbered 1 thru 77 of 77. The remaining four prints without the detail were numbered 1 thru 4 of 4 and became known as the Pirate Edition. Two years later, in 1997, Steadman used those same 'detail' graphics to create another piece entitled Hunter S. Thompson
